The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has produced a surprise podium in each of its three years on the calendar, with Sergio Perez finishing third in 2016 and 2018, and Lance Stroll grabbing P3 two years ago.

So, midfield runners may be excited by the prospect of another unpredictable Grand Prix, and Carlos Sainz sees the possibility of a good finish for McLaren.

Sainz is yet to get off the mark for his new team, with reliability problems and collisions leaving him down the field in all the races so far.

Despite this, he has shown good pace and may be in with an outside shout of a top three finish.

He said: "Baku is one of my favourite circuits on the calendar, it's an unpredictable track but that's what makes it so exciting. You can always sense that all drivers look forward to this race, because everyone knows there could be an opportunity for something special.

"Last year I had a great race in Baku finishing fifth. My ambition is always to improve, at every track, every season, so hopefully we'll have a clean race and can perform strongly”.
