Alonso still open to F1 return but has no 2020 plans

Fernando Alonso spent 17 glorious years in Formula 1, winning two world titles before retiring from the sport in 2019, but the Spaniard is ruling out a return just yet.

Alonso won two World Championships in 2005 and 2006 and before spells at Ferrari and McLaren where he ended his F1 career.

Alonso was considered by many to still be one of the best drivers on the grid but left to pursue the triple crown having already won 24 hour Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Alonso said: “I've said 'hasta luego'.

“Now I have a new challenge to face with the right tools to win, while in F1 there were no conditions to do the same.

“I have no plans for 2020.

“Of course, winning a third title would be the greatest joy.”

Ahead of the new season, there are many possible new narratives with Leclerc at Ferrari and Kubica’s return and Alonso is looking forward to following these stories.

"I will follow Kubica,” said Alonso.

“His story is extraordinary.

“Until a few months ago, Robert seemed to have lost all possibility.

“Then, Leclerc at Ferrari, he is young, intelligent, and talented,” added the Spaniard.
