Qualifying could have been different? Russell explains

George Russell finished in P8 in qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. After a more positive Sprint, where Lewis Hamilton finished second and Russell managed to climb up to claim a point from P11, it was another worse session for Mercedes. The Briton however explained how qualifying could have been different at the Shanghai International Circuit.

"You never know. Of course there's always a bit more on the table. My Q2 lap was really really strong just before the red flag when I got stuck behind Carlos which meant we had to take a second set of new tyres and then only have one set in Q3," George Russell told Viaplay what made his day more difficult in qualifying.

"That isn't an excuse," Russell also made it clear. "But we had the pace to arrive in Q3 with two sets of tyres and it may have been a different story if we had those two opportunities but the fact that this is where we are as a team fighting always between P3 and P8 and the last two races we found ourselves just on the bottom of that group but I'm confident we have a better race now."
