Can Sainz fight Verstappen in Melbourne? 'Throw to victory'

Carlos Sainz achieved P2 during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. The Spaniard underwent surgery due to appendicitis two weeks ago but the Ferrari driver has been on track during every session this weekend. Sainz talks about his physical capabilities, his chances for the race and a possible battle with Max Verstappen.

How is Sainz doing?

During the Formula 1 weekend in Saudi Arabia, Sainz suddenly had to leave the circuit, and it was announced that he would not be back in action. Oliver Bearman was called up as a replacement, but in Melbourne Sainz is back. Things are going reasonably, but not like normal, Sainz explained after qualifying, where he finished second.

"There is nothing to worry about. It's just a weird feeling that you have to get used to while driving, especially these circuits. We're pulling 5 or 6 Gs in some of the brakings and some of the corners. So, obviously, everything is moving. But as I said, without pain, and I can deal with it, and I can adapt to it also."

Can Sainz challenge Verstappen in the race?

So the Ferrari driver will start from the front row of the grid alongside Verstappen. "The race pace today and yesterday has been good enough to make me believe that if I'm feeling good tomorrow, I can give it a run for the win. If not, we will have to keep learning and keep seeing how we can keep getting closer to Max," Sainz said.

What has the driver done to make himself feel better? When asked, Sainz keeps the cards close to his chest. "I'll let you know maybe after the weekend. But I can tell you it's been a lot of things," said the Spaniard.
