Penalty points in Formula 1: this driver is the closest to a suspension

Pierre Gasly had to watch out for weeks in 2023: if he would have been penalised, he would have accumulated so many penalty points that a suspension awaited him. Indeed, in Formula 1, if 12 penalty points are accumulated during the period of the last 12 months, one Grand Prix must be sat out by the driver. After exactly 12 months of receiving it, a penalty point expires again.

With the 2024 season increasingly approaching, here is a look at the number of penalty points each driver has on his licence. Who should look out for the most suspension? The answer to that question is Sergio Perez. The Mexican currently has seven penalty points; for colliding with Albon in Singapore, overtaking Alonso and causing a collision with Magnussen in Japan and causing a collision with Norris in Abu Dhabi. In total, Red Bull Racing's drivers - Max Verstappen has two - have nine penalties; the most of any team.

In his debut season, Logan Sargeant managed to rack up more penalty points than championship points. Whereas he stuck with one point throughout the yearr, the Williams driver got a total of six for penalties in this standings. That is two more than Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have each. Lance Stroll currently has five.
