Fernando Alonso proved this year that he can still race at a high level in Formula 1. The Spaniard stood on the podium eight times this year, while he is now 42 years old. Former race winner Robert Kubica tells the Gurulandia podcast that he thinks Alonso is the best driver in a non-competitive car.

Most people knew for some time that the Aston Martin driver is fast. He won the championship in 2005 and 2006, and he also competed for the title several times in the years when Vettel was champion. In 2018, the Spaniard decided to retire. Who would have thought then that he would still get so many podiums?

'There, Alonso is the best of them all'

Kubica sees Alonso's great performances. He therefore has a clear opinion about the two-time world champion's speed: "In my opinion, Fernando Alonso with a non-competitive car is the strongest of all."

He continued: "I always say that F1 in the first two or three rows is a sport, but when you race at the back... The truth is that if you get half a second and you're wearing a Red Bull you end up on the podium. And even though you are a rookie, and you are a phenomenon, if you have a Williams or any small team it is difficult for you to be among the top 15."

'Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso are otherworldly'

With this, the Pole is not saying that he thinks it's entirely down to the car: "All in all, the veteran participant estimates that the big 'cracks' end up making themselves noticed. "I always say that 90 percent of the drivers who came to the big teams were going to do it anyway, because you see Martians like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso... You have to be very lucky to be in the right place in the right equipment and have a car that is easy to drive."
