It was Ferrari's Carlos Sainz who was narrowly faster than Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen. The Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit may bring another F1 driver to the top step of the podium after nine races in a row. The chances are slim, as both Sainz and Verstappen believe the Dutchman has the stronger car.

Red Bull the better race car

This became clear after qualifying at the Itailan GP. The Ferrari SF23 has a higher top speed, was also very fast and consistent on the longer runs during FP3 in Sainz's hands and has a powerful DRS. While Sainz may have a chance of winning, Verstappen will not be far behind him throughout the race. So it could be an exciting Sunday.

After qualifying, Verstappen is asked if he agrees with Sainz that the Red Bull is the better race car this weekend. Verstappen: "So far this year, yes. So hopefully it will be the same tomorrow." Verstappen gave everything on Saturday: "It was good. Just pushing as hard as I could on a track like this with low downforce. It's not always the easiest, but it was enjoyable out there."

Sainz does not believe in Monza curse

For three years there has been a Monza curse. The winners of past races at the Monza circuit recorded a DNF behind their names the following year. After Verstappen's win in 2022, those are bad omens for the Dutchman. For Sainz, it should be good news.

Sainz: "Maybe you should ask that to Max, but honestly I don't believe in statistics too much and these curses. I think on Sunday, the one who wins is the one who deserves it the most and normally the one who is quicker unless something happens. I'm just going to try to be that one."
