Formula One champion Damon Hill has expressed his criticism of Sebastian Vettel for his move on Max Verstappen during the Japanese Grand Prix, saying the move was "desperate" from the German.

Vettel had his work cut out for him at Suzuka as he started from P8, especially since both Mercedes cars manned the front row again. He had a lightning start, quickly overtaking all midfield cars and his teammate Kimi Raikkonen for P4.

Verstappen gave him a harder time though, as the Dutchman was willing to defend his podium position at all cost.

Vettel eventually did make a move on him but it ended in tears for the 30-year-old, as he clipped the Red Bull and spun out, ending his chance to get anything from the race. Hill doesn't understand the move from Vettel's point of view as there was no room for an overtake there.

"Wrong place, wrong time," the 1996 champion told Auto Motor und Sport.

"Vettel's engine has more power, he had DRS, and he knew Max had a five-second penalty.

"He had to drive more tactically.

"For me it was a desperate act."

Is that too harsh from the Brit, or is he right in his criticism of Vettel?
