Wolff is clear: 'I would give up all profit to win on the track again'

Mercedes took a step forward in the last race weekend in Barcelona. For the first time this season, both drivers of the Silver Arrows were on the podium. Yet at the moment, the German racing stable is still far too short to really contend with Red Bull. Speaking to CNBC, Toto Wolff talks about the gap between the teams.

After the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes took over second place in the constructors' championship from Aston Martin. However, this does give a bit of a flattered picture: Alonso gained 64 points more than team-mate Stroll, while Hamilton and Russell are only 22 points apart, making the points better distributed at Mercedes.

'Would give up all wins'

Now it is up to the German racing stable to be able to fight for championships again. However, Red Bull is so dominant that all other teams have yet to pick up victories this season. According to Wolff, his team will have to pull out all the stops to beat Red Bull: "I would give up every profit just to win on track which for a normal business owner may sound crazy, but it’s how very are calibrated. Now the cost cap has changed everything in our environment so we are not allowed to spend above a certain amount. But Mercedes, we have dominated for a long time, we won eight consecutive championships, and now, Red Bull is just doing a better job. It’s meritocracy, best engineering wins, as long as you respect the rules, the technical, the sporting and the financial rules. We just need to stretch ourselves and beat them."
