Renault's chassis technical director Nick Chester has said that him and his team were all surprised by the improvements that Ferrari made to their engine power in the first half of the season.

It's no secret that Ferrari have improved their engine power significantly and it is undoubtedly the best engine in Formula One right now.

Sauber and Haas have also been beneficiary from the engine upgrades, as their engines are supplied by Ferrari.

Haas now sit just sixteen points behind Chester's Renault who sit in fourth place and he admits he is concerned by Haas' progress following the engine upgrades.

"They definitely made a big step Canada-time, and I would say yeah, we are a bit surprised," Chester told PlanetF1.

"They've got a strong team anyway, but it is really quite strong now. The performance is right up there.

"It does give us a concern. We are obviously in a pretty tight fight, so we have brought stuff all the way up to the shutdown.

"We are going to carry on bringing some aero developments after the shutdown, and it could be tight all year.

"We have got to work pretty hard and even as we switch over to the 2019 car, anything that we can find in developing that we can put back on this car, we will try and do."
