Red Bull Racing are generally strong with strategy and the Austrian racing team had again come up with something for the Bahrain Grand Prix that did the team no favours. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez went from softs to softs, only to finish the race on the hard tyre. The result: a one-two.

Many other teams opted to start on softs and then do two stints on the hard tyre. Red Bull decided to run much of the race on the red tyre.

"We discussed many different scenarios, but both drivers were particularly happy on the soft tyre," Christian Horner explained the strategy when GPblog asked him about it in Bahrain. "We brought a lot of soft tyres into the race so it seemed unfair not to use them. That's what we did. We only had one set of hard tyres so didn't want to expose ourselves if there was a safety car around half distance."

The British team boss is proud of the strong start to the season. "For the first race of the year, to bring them home as we did with the handicap of the wind tunnel time and everything else, the team have done an amazing job to have this as the starting point. We now have to be efficient in our development moving forward. Every circuit will have its different challenges but a great start," Horner said.
