Wolff is a good sport: '2021 Verstappen title not to be questioned'

The FIA/RedBull Racing soap opera over the budget cap overshoot appears to be nearing an end. Toto Wolff once again speaks out about the FIA's failed communication, but also reports that Max Verstappen's title from last year should not be questioned.

There have been talks between Red Bull and the FIA in Austin on the Friday of the US Grand Prix. In these talks, the consequences of Red Bull's infringement were discussed, which seems to finally shed more light on the situation. For the time being, the FIA's communication is very sparse and that bothers Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

Wolff asks not to take 2021 title from Verstappen

The Italian Gazetta dello Sport quotes the Austrian: "The financial regulations are like the technical and sporting regulations. If you made a technical mistake, you get a penalty for it. That should also apply to the financial regulations, even if it is new." According to Wolff, it is the FIA's job to comply with these guidelines and hand out an adequate penalty.

Wolff thinks back to the exciting 2021 season finale in which Lewis Hamilton was narrowly beaten by Red Bull driver Verstappen: "I don't know the exact excess, but one or two million can decide a championship. The FIA has to make a meaningful decision. I just don't think the 2021 title should be in doubt anymore." What Wolff does like to see is a penalty that is clear and proportionate to the offence. Thinking mainly about the future, the team boss says: "This is useful for the future so that everything is fairer and clearer."
