Sainz reveals he "had to take risks" in final qualifying session

Carlos Sainz recorded the third fastest time during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. It looked like he would secure the fastest but was beaten by teammate Charles Leclerc and then again by Max Verstappen. But the Spaniard will start from the back of the grid due to penalties.

Sainz gets the job done

Sainz will be the front runner of those starting at the back. Verstappen also gets a penalty, but it's not as big in comparison. Sainz reports that he had a positive qualifying session in front of Ferrari's home fans.

"It was honestly a good qualifying session. I was feeling very well. I was pushing flat out in Q1 and Q2, in Q3 I didn't have a tow. That cost me the two or three tenths for pole position but I am starting last anyway tomorrow so that doesn't change my life," Sainz said during the top three interviews.

"I had to take a lot of risks to compensate for the lack of tow. I was faster in every corner but slower on every straight and in the end I couldn't improve much," he added.
