Nyck de Vries is not in favour of Colton Herta getting an exceptional position regarding his super license. The Dutchman told Motorsport.com that it would be unfair to other drivers.

Exception for Herta

AlphaTauri hopes to appoint Herta to replace Pierre Gasly in 2023, but the American driver does not (yet) have a super license. The 22-year-old IndyCar driver has won seven races in the top American class, but only has 32 of the 40 points needed for a super license. The FIA is now looking into the matter.

Red Bull is hoping to convince the FIA that Herta is no danger to others and could easily have had more points on his licence, were it not for the fact that the Covid year resulted in points being halved. De Vries would hate to see an exception made for Herta.

De Vries in F1

''Personally I think you should stick to the rules and not make exceptions in situations like this,'' the Dutchman is clear. According to De Vries, making an exception now would not only cause frustration but also upset the whole system, because drivers would then look more quickly to other classes such as Indy Lights, where only twelve cars start.

There is no lack of talent according to De Vries. ''There are plenty of drivers with super licences to choose from''. The Dutchman is one of those drivers himself and he is still hoping for a seat in F1. Williams seems the most likely option for Nyck, but he has stiff competition from American Logan Sargeant.
