The first-ever ePrix of Jakarta is scheduled for this weekend. The Formula E drivers will travel to Indonesia for the ninth race of this season and on a new circuit that has potential to bring spectacle.

ePrix of Jakarta

The first ePrix in Indonesia has been planned for some time. In 2019, there were first talks of a race in the Asian country and in August of that year the knot was tied. For the 2019-2020 Formula E season, the Jakarta ePrix would be on the calendar for the first time.

However, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the race was cancelled, but now two years later, the ePrix is on the schedule after all. The race will be held at the Jakarta International e-Prix Circuit. The circuit is located in the Ancol area where work has been underway since February on the circuit, which is 2,400m long and has eighteen turns.

With the new qualifying format where the best drivers in the standings are no longer hugely disadvantaged, it looks like it will be a slightly 'fairer' championship. The best drivers and teams come out on top every time in qualifying and the race. Stoffel Vandoorne is the leader in the championship with 111 points. The Mercedes driver has a twelve-point lead over number two Edoardo Mortara of Rokit Venturi.

This season there have been five different winners of the first eight races. Vandoorne won once, Mortara won twice and Nyck de Vries (twice), Mitch Evans (twice) and Pascal Wehrlein (once) also won races.

In the standings, this leaves two drivers to keep a close eye on. Jean-Eric Vergne hasn't won a race yet, but he did take pole once and is neatly in third place in the championship with 95 points. Robin Frijns also remained without a victory but is in the top five with 81 points. De Vries is sixth in the championship with 65 points, because in addition to his two victories he has performed very erratically.
