The first of a total of six days of testing is over and Lando Norris is the man who recorded the fastest time during the season opener. The McLaren driver passed Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the final hour. Max Verstappen drove all day on behalf of Red Bull Racing and ended up with a total of 147 laps.

Haas F1 and Alfa Romeo lagging behind

Compared to the morning session, there were five new drivers on the grid at 14:00 when all the signals were back to green after lunch. Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Mick Schumacher, Alexander Albon and Lance Stroll made their first appearance in their new bolides on Wednesday afternoon.

For Bottas and Schumacher, however, it was a day to quickly forget. At Alfa Romeo, Robert Kubica already had a dramatic morning and it didn't get much better for Bottas, who ended up completing only 23 laps in the C42. At Haas F1 they suffered from a fuel tank leak and a broken cooling pipe, resulting in very low mileage.

Top teams have a solid start

At Red Bull Racing they did not suffer from any major problems. Max Verstappen ended up going around the Barcelona circuit 147 times, making him the most productive driver. Combined, however, Ferrari as a team did cover just a bit more mileage (151 laps, ed.), but the difference is minimal. Verstappen recorded the eighth time of the day. The 24-year-old Dutchman set that time quite early in the morning.

Ferrari, just like Red Bull, has had a great start of the year. Leclerc and Sainz managed to set relatively fast times and drive a lot of laps. In these two areas, the racing team from Maranello is doing just a bit better than Mercedes. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are fourth and fifth on the timesheet with just fewer laps to their name.

Norris trumps Ferrari drivers

For a long time it was Charles Leclerc who led the timesheet with his time from the morning session. Carlos Sainz came close, but didn't go over it in the afternoon. Norris did. The young Briton sat down in the last hour and went twice as fast as Leclerc. These times don't tell us much though, because we will only see the cars with all their latest updates in Bahrain.

Four 'new' drivers in action tomorrow

Four drivers we have not seen in action yet. Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and Guanyu Zhou had to watch from the sidelines on Wednesday, but they will all be in action on Thursday. Like today, we will start testing at 09:00. Between 13:00 and 14:00 there is again a lunch break.
