From a team on the very last starting row to a first podium finish in four years. That is the difference between 2020 and 2021. Since the sale of the former private team, Williams has been making steady progress. With 23 points, it was even its best season since 2017.

Motivation

Looking back, the Williams team is extremely proud of what has been achieved. Indeed, according to CEO Jost Capito, all expectations have been exceeded in 2021. Speaking to Motorsportweek he tells that the development of the team was as hoped and expected. In terms of points and results George Russell and Nicholas Latifi did better than expected.

When asked about his personal highlights, Capito mentioned the first points in a long time at Budepast and then the podium at Spa (with Russell). "These were also important moments to regain the confidence, find the motivation again and push even harder to prove that if we make courageous decisions, it can pay off," says Capito.

A different mindset

Although important steps have been taken, Williams also knows that their best driver - George Russell - will no longer be working for the team next season. In his place will be Alexander Albon, who may need time to settle in. The pair should ensure that Williams eventually returns to the top. Capito realises that there is still a long way to go to achieve this. "You can't expect miracles. But I believe we are on the right track and we have made a change in mentality. That's going to help us move forward."
