A nasty accident during the Bahrain Grand Prix left a Ferrari mechanic with a broken leg.

Ferrari has been fined 50,000 euros after a mistake during a pitstop for Kimi Raikkonen left a mechanic in hospital with a broken leg.

Kimi Raikkonen had been called into the pits to try and force Mercedes into a mistake however it was Ferrari that would make the error, Raikkonen given the green light to leave before his rear left tyre had been changed. As he left the pit box he hit one of his mechanics which resulted in a nasty injury.

The Finn was immediately told to stop and retired in the pit lane whilst the Ferrari mechanics tended to their injured colleague.

Francesco Cigorini was left with a fractured shin bone and fibula but is recovering in hospital after a successful operation.

Raikkonen said he was only doing what he thought was right after being given the green light to leave the pit lane.

"I go when the light is green. I don't see what happens behind and unfortunately he got hurt," he said.

"My job is to go when the light says so. Hopefully, he's OK."
