A day since it was announced, and it still doesn’t seem real. Daniel Ricciardo will drive for Renault next season. The Australian has spent the past five years of his career but has made the brave decision to jump ship for next season.
Ricciardo made his F1 debut with backmarkers HRT for the second half of 2011 before joining Toro Rosso for 2012, where he caught the eye of the world with his daring overtakes and strong defensive driving.
He replaced fellow Australian Mark Webber to partner four-time champion Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull in 2014, and duly out raced and out scored the German, winning three races in his first season at the Austrian team.
Four more race wins have followed, including one of the best weekend displays we have seen in recent times at Monaco, where he topped every session and took the win.
Ricciardo said in a video he posted online: "By far the toughest decision I've made in my racing career - but 29 years living on this Earth, it was actually one of the toughest life decisions I've made.
"Personally I felt it was a time now where it was good for me to move on and have a fresh start somewhere else, I think it will be healthy for me."
