"I would have liked to see Nyck de Vries in Formula 1"

Nyck de Vries will driver for Mercedes in Formula E next season but many feel that the Formula 2 championship leader should have been given an opportunity in Formula 1.

"I understand his choice, although I am a little disappointed, but mostly in the teams," Van de Grint said to RTL Slipstream. "I would have liked to see him in Formula 1 because I think a Formula 2 champion deserves a chance in Formula 1.

Formula E is becoming an increasingly popular racing series. De Vries will hope that he can show Mercedes how fast he is in Formula E and then maybe in the future cross over to Formula 1.

The fact that he hasn't been signed to Haas or Williams could suggest that they will be sticking with their current drivers and that few will be called up from junior series for 2020.
