In WEC qualifying for the 6 Hours of Fuji, Toyota managed to capture pole position in the Hypercars in its home country of Japan. With a 1:27.794, Kamui Kobayashi in the #7 Toyota was no less than five-tenths faster than Toyota's #8 with former Formula 1 driver Brendon Hartley at the wheel.
Brendon Hartley forms a team with Sébastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa. They lead the drivers' championship with a 23-point lead. Behind them, it is a battle between the #7 Toyota (Jose Maria Lopez, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi) and the No51 Ferrari (James Calado, Alessandro Pier Guidi and Antonio Giovinazzi). They have the same number of points.
In LMP2, Phillip Hanson drove the fastest time on behalf of United Autosport. Louis Deletraz, who we remember from his time in Formula 2, drove the second fastest time in Team WRT colours. He was just under a tenth too slow.
In the LM GTE Am, pole position was for Nicky Catsburg's team. Ben Keating took the wheel and drove a 1:38.338, good for first place. The difference with Iron Dames was minimal at 35 thousandths. So on Sunday morning, Catsburg can have a shot at - again - a win in the WEC. Earlier this year he already won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, among others.
