Imola can organize a Grand Prix; circuit renews Grade 1 license

The rest of the calendar for 2020 has yet to be announced and although the intention is to go to another continent after Monza, nothing is certain yet. Should that not be possible for whatever reason, then there is a chance that the European season will be longer. Several circuits are in favour of this, including Hockenheim, Mugello and Imola. The latter is now officially ready to receive Formula 1.

To be able and allowed to organize a Formula 1 race it is a requirement that the circuit in question has a 'Grade 1' license. This is granted by the FIA to a circuit on the basis of all kinds of requirements. Imola is now in a "position" to receive the Formula 1, says the chief of the circuit, Motorsportweek.com.

The FIA has renewed their license and that means that they can organize a race, but whether it actually comes to that is a matter of time. The Mugello circuit, which is Ferrari's, would be the one at the top of the list to receive Formula 1 a week after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Whether there will be a Grand Prix at Imola in San Marino is to wait and see, perhaps that would be a bit too much of a good thing with already two races in Italy. If Mugello disappears, Imola is an interesting option. Their license would expire next week, but today that requirement has been renewed for a longer period of time.

Uberto Selvatico Estense, chief of Imola, says: "With the renewal of the homologation, we are in a position to also host a Formula 1 grand prix. We hope that this dream can become reality with the teamwork of institutions and territory.”
