Maximilian Günther had a dramatic qualifying session. On the first lap, the driver lost control and drove rock hard into the wall, causing a lot of damage to his car.
It resulted in a red flag early in qualifying, as the car had to be removed. It eventually took over 15 minutes before the car was off the track and the remaining drivers could finish the remaining seven minutes.
Besides Günther, Edoardo Mortara also failed to keep his car out of the wall. The Italian drove the back of his car hard into the side, preventing him from setting a faster time and having to settle for a tenth finishing spot.

Jake Hughes, Oliver Rowland, Dan Ticktum and Lucas Di Grassi managed to finish among the first four. This set them for the quarter-finals of qualifying, scheduled for later in the session.
