An issue with active aerodynamics caused Max Verstappen to crash heavily during qualifying for the Austrian GP.
The Dutchman was on course for a quick lap when his car stepped out in the final corners of the track. At high speed, Verstappen slammed into the gravel trap. Exactly how it happened isn’t clear, but there were issues with his rear wing.
As a result, the chance of pole position was gone. Just before that, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had dipped under Antonelli’s time to go P1 and P2. George Russell improved his time and was briefly under investigation, but the stewards soon ruled that his time would stand.
