James Vowles will remain with Williams for a longer period. The team has taken a step forward under the former Mercedes strategist and hopes to continue this trajectory into 2026.
In January 2023, James Vowles announced his departure from Mercedes. Vowles was looking for a new challenge and found it at Williams, taking over from Jost Capito, who stepped down at the end of 2022. Now, Vowles has extended his contract, reportedly for multiple years.
Since Vowles' arrival in 2023, the team has made clear progress. In 2024, however, the team took a step back. The car needed to be more comprehensively built. This was expected to yield fewer points initially, but according to Vowles, it was the best way forward. Vowles and his technical team, led by Pat Fry, were proven right.

How did Williams perform under Vowles?

In 2025, Williams has already amassed more points in the first ten Grands Prix than in 2022, 2023, and 2024 combined. And that's in the last year of the regulations, where, for budget reasons, Williams chose to race in 2025 with the 2024 chassis. Updates in 2025 are minimal, all with an eye on 2026.
Yet, with 55 points, Williams stands 5th among the constructors after 10 Grands Prix. Carlos Sainz plays an important role in this. Among all the teams that wanted him, Sainz chose Williams because he had the most confidence in James Vowles' project. This also speaks volumes about the team principal.
Now that Williams has set its sights on the new regulations, it only makes sense for a new contract for Vowles to emerge. Williams has stated that 2026 might be a bit early, but 2027 and 2028 should be the years when Williams is expected to be at the forefront again. Now that Vowles and his team have set the path forward, this seems like the best moment to open up his contract and bind him longer to this project.
