Aston Martin has confirmed that American talent and reserve driver Jak Crawford will replace Fernando Alonso during FP1 at the Japanese Grand Prix. The former Formula 2 driver became the Third Driver for the British team in 2026, and the first free practice session at Suzuka will be Crawford's first miles behind the wheel of the troublesome AMR26 this season.
The 20-year-old will take part in his third FP1 session in less than six months after competing in two more sessions in 2025, taking to the iconic Japanese circuit for the first time in his career.

"I'm really excited to get behind the wheel and drive for the team at Suzuka," Crawford stated in an Aston Martin press release.
"It's such a historic yet demanding circuit, and I can't wait to apply what I've learned in the simulator to real track conditions.
"A big thank you to the team for giving me this opportunity. As with my previous FP1 sessions, I'm looking forward to making the most of it and learning as much as I can."
"It's great that we're able to give Jak another opportunity in FP1 as part of our ongoing commitment to developing young talent," said Mike Krack, Aston Martin's Chief Trackside Officer.
"He has been working hard, especially in the simulator back at Silverstone, and this session will allow him to continue building valuable track experience.
"It's an important opportunity for him to keep progressing, while also contributing to the team by gathering useful data and feedback."
Continued talk on team principal changes
It was another disastrous showing for Aston Martin at the Chinese Grand Prix after Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were both forced to retire from the second race of the season.
After the weekend in Shanghai, rumours have been swirling surrounding a change in team principal at the British team, with Audi's Jonathan Wheatley reportedly on the shortlist.
