Max Verstappen endured a tough Friday at the Hungarian Grand Prix, struggling to find pace in both practice sessions and finishing as low as 14th in FP2. Yet, F1 analyst Peter Windsor offered a surprising take on the Dutchman’s performance. In a detailed breakdown of Friday sessions via his YouTube channel, Windsor acknowledged Verstappen’s struggles but highlighted several moments where the reigning champion showed promising pace despite the difficult day.
''Around a relatively short lap of the Hungaroring which is all about downforce, traction to some extent, couple of quick corners where Max actually looked very good,'' he stated.
''And it's a classic Max day really because if you followed him on board, he looked very good in the car as ever, disguising everything that was going on. Lovely turn-ins, everything nice, but in reality, as he reported, driving as if he was on ice. No grip front or rear.''
Max Verstappen has a difficult weekend so far in Hungary
Adjustments from Red Bull seem not to work
Red Bull's Technical Director, Pierre Waché, admitted that the team tried several things. Windsor saw how this did not benefit Red Bull:
''They tried to make some changes between the two sessions, the morning session and the afternoon one, and found about a tenth of a second, whereas Lando went half a second quicker in the afternoon. So Red Bull is obviously struggling.'' Verstappen referred to an 'uncontrollable' car in Hungary, however, he did keep hope for improvement for the rest of the weekend.
Windsor saw where Verstappen could improve the most:
''The problem is that Max was actually lifting at a much lower speed, about six km/h slower approach speed from what he'd been doing coming through the S's than the two McLaren drivers. You can't say it was quite as impressive impressive, but Max looking really good there anyway.''''If you didn't know what the actual speeds were you'd think 'wow Max Verstappen's quick in the Red Bull' but he wasn't over the lap.''
