Mark Webber has drawn similarities between his title fight with Sebastian Vettel in 2010 and the teammate battle between the McLarens this season.“When you're competing against the best people week in week out is takes its toll.”
- Mark Webber on the strain of a title fightThe former
F1 driver and manager to
Oscar Piastri relived his fierce teammate battle along Vettel as part of Channel 4’s broadcast of the Brazil GP.
Webber, who was one of four drivers in contention for the 2010 title at the finale in Abu Dhabi, alongside Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, reflected on the intensity of that title battle 15 years later.
He said: “Believe it or not, I think it was nearly easier when I was in the car, because you’re across everything and you've got more control over what can happen.
“It was a tremendous fight with Seb, Lewis and Fernando.
“Long season of course, draining for all of us - that’s elite sport, that's what it's about.
“When you're competing against the best people week in week out is takes its toll.”
Parallels between Oscar and Seb
Despite a recent slump in form, which has seen his once 34-point championship lead turn into a deficit of 24 points to teammate
Lando Norris, in many ways Piastri has still exceeded expectations this year.
At just 24 years old, he has taken home seven race wins and led the drivers championship for a large portion of the season.
Webber, who has managed Piastri since 2020, drew a comparison between his fellow Australian and Vettel, who was just 23 years and 134 days old when he became the sport’s youngest world champion in 2010.
“He’s still so young in his career as Seb was.
“But to see him so young in year three fighting for a world title quite quickly is pretty surreal and bizarre
“But it's nice to be involved because a lot of drivers don't fight for a world title even once in their career, so you've got to try and find the positives but also of course you want to win.”

Following a disappointing Brazil GP, where Piastri fell a further 23 points behind Norris who won both Sprint and Grand Prix,
Webber offered encouraging words to Piastri, urging him to ‘find the strength to fight back.’Similarly Vettel, who overcame his own setbacks during a long and illustrious Formula One career, told Sky Deutschland that Piastri needs the help of his team around him to get him back driving freely again.
