Max Verstappen may have won his first world championship in Abu Dhabi 2021, but the way he defeated Lewis Hamilton was so intense that he would rather not experience that Sunday again. In retrospect, he calls that season and the decisive Formula 1 race terrifying, despite the eventual victory.
Although several years have passed, the ending of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP still leaves many lingering questions and will likely go down as the most controversial finish in Formula 1 World Championship history.
Max Verstappen probably doesn’t share that view — he’s likely the only one who looks back on that day with a smile, having seized the chance to claim his first career title thanks to a glaring mistake by then-race director Michael Masi during the Safety Car period.
Yet despite the immense joy he felt that day, the Dutchman has no intention of ever reliving a weekend like that again.

Verstappen recalls intense battle with Hamilton

“I don’t want to relive that Sunday myself, preferably not, because then I fear I might have a heart attack,” he said in an interview with Formula 1 Magazine.
“The entire season was very intense, with a climax in the final lap of the last race.”
The battle between Red Bull Racing and Mercedes was definitely intense, with the tension between the two teams reaching a boiling point several times. The pressure ran high not only between the drivers but also between team principals Christian Horner and Toto Wolff.
How could anyone forget the infamous radio outburst from the Mercedes team principal, who openly accused Masi by saying, “This is not right,” after he ordered a final flying lap to be allowed.

Verstappen finally concluded his recollection of that tragicomic weekend: “That whole season was very intense, with two teams pushing themselves to the limit. And that’s something you have to admire and that’s good for the sport''.
''Two teams making so few mistakes throughout an entire season — that was really impressive and special. Especially if you won it, then it’s a bit more fun to talk about.”
