Verstappen dismisses Italy tax fears as Bearman predicts freezing Imola finale

Max Verstappen has played down concerns over a potential Formula 1 season finale at Imola, insisting that the reported tax complications facing drivers should not prevent the sport from returning to Italy.
Formula 1 is assessing contingency plans for the final rounds of the 2026 campaign, with Qatar and Abu Dhabi still scheduled to host the closing two races. However, amid uncertainty surrounding events in the Middle East, Imola has emerged as a possible alternative venue should either round be unable to go ahead.
The prospect has already generated debate in the paddock. Valtteri Bottas said drivers were reluctant about racing in Italy, pointing to both the likely winter conditions and the tax situation that has reportedly affected members of the grid.
Haas driver Oliver Bearman also expects the weather to be a significant factor if Formula 1 heads to Imola in December. The British rookie believes the tax question will have less relevance for him personally, but knows exactly what conditions to expect from the Italian winter.
“The tax complication is a bit less relevant to me than some of the others,” Bearman said. “But, no, I think we should bring the snow chains and the hand warmers.

“Let’s see how it goes, but it will definitely be cold if we’re in Imola in December. I was living close by for a good few years, and in winter, definitely cold. You know about it.”
Imola has traditionally occupied a spring slot on the Formula 1 calendar, meaning a December visit would present an entirely different set of circumstances. Shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures and the risk of fog would all be considerations for the championship and the FIA should the circuit be called upon.
Verstappen, though, was far less concerned by the prospect. The Red Bull driver acknowledged that Imola would be colder than it is during its usual calendar window, but argued that there are more difficult places to spend the winter.
“There are worse places to be in the wintertime than in Imola,” Verstappen said. “So, yeah, it’s a little bit colder. Then in the summer, it gets darker a bit sooner, but I think we’re all clever enough to make sure that we don’t drive in the dark.”
The four-time world champion also offered a firm response when asked about the tax concerns that Bottas had raised. “And there is no tax issue. You just have to pay it,” Verstappen added.

The comments underline a clear split in opinion within the paddock. Bearman has focused primarily on the practical challenge of racing in the Italian cold, while Verstappen sees no major obstacle to an Imola finale if Formula 1 requires a replacement event.
For now, Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain on the calendar with a decision expected by the middle of the month. But if circumstances force Formula 1 to activate its contingency plans, an unusually cold and potentially controversial trip to Imola could bring the 2026 season to a close.
