A previously unaired team radio from the Canadian GP reveals that Gianpiero Lambiase initially believed it was Oscar Piastri who caused the late-race incident with Lando Norris.
The Canadian Grand Prix will be remembered not only for George Russell’s brilliant victory, but perhaps even more so for the clash between the two McLarens in the closing stages of a race that, up to that point, had lacked major excitement.
As widely known by now, it was Lando Norris who made a costly error in judgment, immediately owning up to his mistake and apologizing to both the team and his teammate.

Lambiase was initially misled

However, while the race was still ongoing, Max Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, informing his driver about the incident between the two McLarens, initially believed it was Piastri who had caused the collision.
"Norris has had contact with Piastri. Double yellows," Lambiase said over the radio on lap 67.
"Piastri put Norris onto the grass and into the wall along the start/finish straight. Safety Car. Stay out, Max."
However, despite an incident that could have lasting consequences, Andrea Stella appreciated Norris’s immediate accountability after the race: ''For me the most important thing is to see a reaction where people take responsibility of their actions and we have already seen it."
