Toto Wolff sees himself staying in Formula 1 for the long term, continuing to lead Mercedes well into the future. “Success is the driver, not profit, and there will always be another goal”
- Toto WolffWolff joined Mercedes in 2012 as a shareholder and executive director. He gradually took on a more prominent role, becoming CEO and Team Principal in January 2013 and eventually acquiring a 33 percent stake in the team.
When asked if he sees himself in this business for life, the Austrian told The Telegraph: “In one way or another, yes, because Susie and I have ownership of the team. It’s our sport, it’s our niche. So I don’t know if I’m going to be executive or non-executive, a chairman or just a regular director of the board, but I think my involvement is long-term.”
Recently, Wolff sold 15% of his personal stake in the team’s holding company to American billionaire George Kurtz, founder and CEO of CrowdStrike and already a Mercedes partner, leaving him with a 28 percent share.
“Success is the driver, not profit, and there will always be another goal - he added - I don’t know how much I could remove myself from the team, even as a non-executive. Because I would always know how to do it better, obviously. I would be the annoying shareholder on the sofa who in hindsight would have taken better decisions.”
Wolff doubles down on 400 km/h claim as 2026 F1 overhaul looms
Focusing on the next generation of cars earlier this season, the Mercedes team principal stated, “If you were to deploy all the energy on a single straight, you could make those cars go 400 kilometers an hour. I don't know if somebody got afraid by it, but we could.”
Mercedes is rumored to be one of the teams furthest ahead in developing their 2026 power unit, even though the new regulations remain a big unknown for everyone.
