Guenther Steiner commented on the news of Christian Horner’s dismissal and the appointment of Laurent Mekies as the new CEO and team principal, jokingly hinting at a possible return to Red Bull.
After not having his contract renewed with Haas at the end of 2023, Guenther Steiner is one of the few experienced team principals yet to return to the F1 grid.
The Merano-born manager has chosen a different path—at least for now—working as a TV commentator and pundit in recent years. In his new role, Steiner naturally couldn’t avoid commenting on the big news of the week: Christian Horner’s immediate dismissal and Laurent Mekies’ appointment as his replacement.
A regular guest on the Red Flag podcast, the Italian-American expressed surprise at the shocking news: ''I was pretty surprised as well when it happened. There was something going on at Red Bull. I think we all were aware of it.''
We cannot say 'oh, we didn't know that something was going on' because it's more than a year now that since that scandal in the beginning of last year. It wasn't happy days anymore at Red Bull, I would say. But I didn't expect it. If something like this happens, normally Red Bull is pretty good at managing it a little bit with a gliding path or something, but this came completely out of the blue anyway to me.''
''Obviously, maybe a dreadful not, but I think because nothing was out there that it will happen. So I must have, you know, things change and things move on.''

Is Steiner considering an F1 return with Red Bull?

Steiner was then asked if he was considering a return to Formula 1 with Red Bull, to which Guenther replied with a joke: ''I love you too much! (to leave). I have been there, and you don't want to go back so no, I don't think so.''
He then added: ''I think Laurent will stay there. I mean, they know Laurent pretty well from the Toro Rosso times. He worked at Toro Rosso, then he came back to racing Bulls, so he's a well-known person for them, and obviously they've made... Laurent is a good guy.''
