Sprint race option received positively by teams, definitive decision postponed

To make Formula 1 more exciting and unpredictable, changes to the rules have been the main focus of attention in the recent past. But alternative race formats can work just as well, and a common option is so-called sprint races, which are used to form the grid for Sunday's race. Discussions today about this modified format show that the teams are open to it, but need more time to make a final decision.

The suggestion of sprint racing was also raised in 2020, as it has proven itself in other racing classes. The new Formula One CEO, Stefano Domenicali, is a supporter of the concept and brought it back on the table through a vote. The Formula 1 teams have voted and where it failed to pass last year, a decision now seems imminent.

Despite the fact that the decision has not been taken yet, the teams were receptive to the idea of introducing the sprintraces. They have, however, asked for more time before making a final decision. They might first want to analyse the alternative format from all sides in order to be aware of the intended as well as unintended consequences of the alternative format.

The freeze in engine development, requested by Red Bull and Honda and now unanimously signed by the teams, was also discussed today. There will also be further discussions about the newly planned race at Portimao and the details surrounding the cost cap.
