Marcus Ericsson claims Sauber need to change their mindset heading into Grand Prix weekends. Since the hybrid era arrived, Sauber have been falling down the grid.
Sauber are currently 9th in the constructors' standings, but only 9 points away from 7th placed Toro Rosso. They’ve scored in half of the races so far this season and have exceeded their 2016 and 2017 combined total already.
It’s these results which has Ericsson feeling positive and insists his team should also change their mindset.
“In Barcelona, everyone was saying ‘oh this track shouldn’t suit us’, and within the team, everyone was thinking ‘yeah it’s going to be tough,” said Marcus.
“And I said ‘look, guys, we cannot go into the weekend thinking that, I think we can be here and mix it up’ that was my feeling going into Barcelona.
“Then coming [to Monaco] before the weekend started, we knew this track could be difficult for us, but I said we should be in the mix - we score points on a regular basis.”
The team missed out on points in Monaco. But Ericsson was only 1 second away from 10th placed Carlos Sainz. The team will be hoping their mid-2016 financial takeover starts to pay dividends as they look to raise their game.
“I will go into every weekend now and have the aim to score points and get to Q2, and that’s how we need to work as a team,” added Ericsson.
