Sainz feels guilty: 'Sorry to the entire team and every fan out there'

Carlos Sainz had a disappointing qualifying session of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The Spaniard crashed at the end of Q2 and therefore has to settle for a tenth starting position for the sprint race. For Sainz, who at that point already seemed certain of Q3, that was a big disappointment.

The driver was pushing his car to complete a lap before precipitation returned, but that turned out not to be a good idea. Sainz lost control and crashed hard into the wall, leaving him with nothing to do but get out of his car.

"This is a very tough one to take and there is little to say other than sorry to the entire team and every fan out there," Sainz stated in Ferrari's press release afterwards. "I wasn’t even pushing that hard, as we had more than enough pace to make it into Q3 comfortably. The car surprised me with a snap and I couldn’t stop it before hitting the wall."

His teammate Charles Leclerc also had little luck. The Monegasque managed to set the fastest time at the beginning of Q3, but moments later Max Verstappen turned out to be a lot faster. Therefore, the Dutchman can start from pole position in the sprint race on Saturday afternoon.
