Red Bull Racing simulator and development driver Rudy van Buren expressed his "irritation" at George Russell "trying to throw [Max Verstappen] under the bus" at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver had a complaint lodged against him by Red Bull after winning in Montreal, with his driving during the safety car what the Austrian team were unhappy about.
Under safety car conditions, Russell broke heavily, which led to Verstappen briefly overtaking him, resulting in the Brit coming over the radio during the final few laps about that, while Red Bull decided to lodge a complaint on the 27-year-old.
Ultimately, Red Bull's protest against Russell's actions was discussed deep into the night, but the stewards eventually decided not to penalise Russell.
At Viaplay, Van Buren was not pleased with Russell's driving under the safety car: “I'm somewhat irritated by it, to put it mildly, in front of the camera. George has a certain distance to the safety car that he needs to maintain.
It was another layer to the rivalry between Max Verstappen and George Russell, just a couple of weeks after those two came together at the Spanish Grand Prix, resulting in a huge penalty for the Dutchman.

Van Buuren disapproves of Russell's action against Verstappen

Van Buren was not the only one irritated by Russell's actions during the safety car. The internet also disapproved of the way the Mercedes driver behaved, with many believing that the Brit deliberately braked to get Verstappen penalised.
Talking about trying to throw someone under the bus," continued a fiery Van Buren.
"He's looking in his right mirror, and Max is driving alongside. He's warming up his tyres, and as soon as he thinks, 'If I brake now, Max will pass me', he does it.
"Then he goes on the radio to say something. And what he forgets in that process is that he ends up more than ten car lengths behind the safety car, because he braked. So guys, what are we even doing?” concluded the Red Bull sim driver.
