Sergio Pérez has spoken again about his difficult departure from Red Bull, expressing his belief that his former team regrets letting him go, especially since his replacements have clearly not delivered better results.
Despite having signed an extension last summer, Sergio Pérez’s 2025 ended with a bitter split from Red Bull, which was dissatisfied with his performance compared to Max Verstappen.
‘’It was a crucial point because I had signed a contract
in Monaco and everyone was talking about my future. It would have been very easy
for the team to protect me, but that did not happen. No one
talked about anything else but me,’’ Perez told candidly via 'el desde podcast'.
Does Red Bull Racing regret it?
However, the pressure on Perez was understandable. While Max
Verstappen managed to become world champion with the RB20, Perez scored hardly any points after the summer break.
Eventually, Perez totaled 152 points, almost 300 less
than the 437 of his teammate. Perez's disappointing performances led
to Red Bull finishing third in the constructors' championship.
Even the Japanese driver has been unable to break the curse hanging over Red Bull’s second seat, scoring just 4 points with a ninth-place finish as his best result.
A curse so severe that, without Verstappen, the Milton Keynes team would actually be dead last in the Constructors’ Championship by a wide margin.
When asked if Red Bull should now apologize to Perez, he replied: ‘’No. Ultimately, that's how sport is. Decisions were
made because they put too much pressure on themselves. I know that deep down they regret it. I have it from a very reliable source,’’ Perez concluded cryptically.
Sergio Pérez also spoke about his potential return to
Formula 1,
revealing that negotiations with Cadillac appear to be progressing well, even though there’s no rush to sign a contract just yet.
