Lando Norris got pole ahead of Charles Leclerc and teammate Oscar Piastri. Where was Max Verstappen? 1 second behind the British McLaren driver. Fernando Alonso comments on the very big gap.
Of course,no one thought that McLaren could exert this level of dominace over Max Verstappen. The days of the Bahrain Grand Prix seemed so far away, and since then Red Bull has introduced severalupgrades that should've brought the fight a lot closer. At least in theory that is.
The reality is much different, though. Despite the fact that the Austrian Grand Prix is held at a Red Bull owned track, the team could not perform here either. There was certainly more performance in the RB21, there's no arguing that, but not enough to fight Norris for pole position.

Alonso believes the gap will only grow

When asked by GPblog what he thought of the gap between Norris and Verstappen, and whether or not it was possible for the Dutchman to fight back, Alonso said: "Yeah, I mean one second. [That] difference is a lot here."
"But Lando (Norris, ed.) has been always very strong and the McLaren as well. So yeah, I think tomorrow will be even more difference," warned Alonso.
"I think In qualifying everyone can get a little bit closer to the McLaren, but then on the race pace and the tyre management. They are in another category. So tomorrow will be Something to watch," concluded the Spaniard.
