No Formula 1, but longer stay in IndyCar for Honda

Yesterday Honda announced that they will stop supplying engines in Formula 1 after 2021. Today the news comes from America that Honda and Chevrolet will continue to supply power sources in the IndyCar Series.

At first sight it seems a remarkable choice for Honda to continue with IndyCar while they stop Formula 1. But the team working on the Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri Formula 1 engines in Japan has nothing to do with Honda Performance Development supplying engines to the IndyCar Series.

IndyCar is also taking the step towards hybrid engines. Starting in 2023, the championship will continue with hybrid V6 twin-turbo engines. Honda and Chevrolet have both signed a contract which means that they will supply engines until the end of this decade.

"Honda welcomes this step to the future by IndyCar, action that mirrors Honda’s efforts to develop and manufacture high-performance, electrified products that will meet industry challenges and delight our customers," said Ted Klaus, president of Honda Performance Development through the IndyCar site.
