McLaren CEO Zak Brown has backed his team’s ‘papaya rule’ approach in his statement at the FIA awards ceremony in Tashkent.

The 54-year-old, speaking while receiving the Constructors’ Championship at the FIA event, lauded the McLaren team staff for their contribution toward the successes achieved throughout the campaign.
“Fantastic season. All the men and women at McLaren have done an unbelievable job, led by our two outstanding drivers,” he began.
The American motorsports chief continued by throwing his weight behind the papaya rule approach, which he believed gave both of the team’s drivers a genuine chance to win the Drivers’ Championship.

“Of course, the job Andrea has done leading our team, and to go into the final race with two drivers fighting for the World Championship when everyone said that couldn’t be done, is remarkable. I’m just very proud of how McLaren went racing, and that’s exactly what we plan to do next year,” Brown added.

Piastri spills on papaya rules

Throughout the 2025 season, the papaya rules largely drew attention due to the criticism it received.
Earlier, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri shared his thoughts on the approach. The Australian driver leapt to defend the system, highlighting how it helps ensure fairness within the team.
Piastri also noted how the rule has, so far, made him a better driver, particularly when racing teammate Lando Norris.
