Marko sees veteran driver deliver high performance: 'He is so fast'

All eyes are on Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc to decide who will take the world title this season. Helmut Marko, however, is also interested in the other drivers and sees a big surprise, he told Oe24.at.

The Austrian advisor has been impressed by Fernando Alonso's level of performance. The Madrid native may be 41 years old, but Marko still sees plenty of qualities in the driver both on and off the track.

"He is so fast. It's unbelievable what kind of races he delivers: for me, the surprise of the year," Marko stressed in the in-depth interview. "As a driver I even believe he can still win. The only question is whether Aston Martin can offer him the right package."

Alonso is in his final season at Alpine, as he will be back at Aston Martin in 2023. Marko is confident the Spaniard will do well at his new team, although it will be difficult for him to consistently finish in the points.

The departure of Vettel, on the other hand, is understandable to Marko. According to Marko the German is simply interested in other things in life and therefore his life in Formula 1 does not fit his wishes as well. He therefore thinks it is good that the four-time world champion is drawing his own conclusions.
