Luck for Verstappen: 'In my time he would have crashed'

This weekend the Grand Prix at Zandvoort is back on the schedule for the first time in 36 years. Jackie Stewart drove the race in 1965 and remembers well how unsafe the sport was at the time. He told this to Motorsport.com.
The Scot watched startled footage of Max Verstappen at Silverstone crashing into the wall at full speed after a collision with Lewis Hamilton. "The accident Verstappen had at Silverstone earlier this year, in my time he would have crashed," Stewart stated. "It was a massive crash. These days the circuit fence gives way and the car itself has a crumple zone as well. The cockpits today are much safer than ever before."

Verstappen goes for victory

The Dutch public will be hoping for Verstappen to take victory on Sunday, but for now that's not a done deal. Mercedes and Red Bull Racing will keep each other in the balance, so the chances will be equal.
Stewart, however, thinks the Dutch fans can cheer this weekend. "I think Max will win because the crowd will go wild, and he is just competitive. Red Bull is also competitive, but Mercedes have maybe been too successful for too long. It would be great if the homegrown boy is going to win here."
