In recent years we have already seen several historic circuits return to the calendar such as
Imola, Portimão and Mugello. Not only the drivers, but also the fans were very happy to see these tracks making a comeback. Because of the special calendar last year the drivers might have to travel to Jerez again, according to
Motorsport.com.
The coronavirus crisis forced a complete change in the
Formula 1 calendar. Calendar wise this was not very convenient, but the return of historic circuits was not a problem for the drivers and sometimes even a welcome challenge.
The Spanish circuit Jerez de la Frontera also saw this and wants to return to the
Formula 1 calendar. At this moment they are already ready to replace other circuits:
"We are the first reserve. As soon as an event falls off the calendar we can step in", says Spanish politician Juan Marin who is responsible for tourism in that area.
Two races in Spain
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is already on the 2022 calendar so Jerez would then ensure two races in Spain in the future. Good news for Fernando Alonso and
Carlos Sainz, as it means they would get another home race. However, nothing is certain yet as there is a lot of interest and there are few places on the calendar.
