Nico Hulkenberg believes the gap between his team Renault and the three leading teams has grown over the summer.
Hulkenberg finished the Australian Grand Prix in seventh whilst team-mate Sainz came tenth to pick up a point.
The French teams total meant that picked up the fewest amount of points out of the five teams that scored points. They are 13 points adrift from Red Bull.
In qualifying the gap is more obvious. Hulkenberg, the fastest of the two Renault’s finished 1.4 seconds behind the slowest Red Bull.
Nico said: “The guys ahead of us were a long way ahead.
“We wanted to reduce the gap in the winter but it seems that it has grown even more. That is not good. We have a lot of work to do.”
And the German claimed that every area needs to be looked at in order to improve: “In my opinion it’s everything.
“It’s all about the little details. It’s partly the engine, partly the aerodynamics but also the chassis, the dynamics, the mechanicals and so on.”
Another cause for Renault’s concern will be McLaren’s pace and reliability in the battle to become ‘best of the rest’.
