Horner: 'Financially it doesn't make any sense to agree'

Formula 1 wanted to host not three, but six sprint races in 2022. Red Bull Racing was one of the teams not keen on another three extra races in the season and at the BBC Christian Horner explains why.

In 2021, F1 tried something new: qualifying via a short sprint race, run over about 100 kilometres. In 2022, Formula 1 wanted to organise six sprint races, but this was blocked by a number of teams, including Red Bull.

According to Horner, it was a simple choice not to agree to the additional sprint races. "Financially it makes zero sense to agree to any sprint races, but in the interests of the sport, we conceded to agree to three," he reveals.

The 2022 budget cap has also been reduced by $5 million from 2021. This along with a large amount of inflation and high gas and electricity bills meant that Red Bull saw nothing in three additional sprint races.
