Ferrari's sporting condition is a delicate one, but then again should rumours be believed, so is their structure with team principal Frederic Vasseur's position seemingly under pressure. In this rather unstable climate Lewis Hamilton has called upon Ferrari to do something the Frenchman has downplayed in recent times.
Ferrari has so far got three podiums in the past ten races. Far too little silverware for a team that should be used to winning F1 races at a canter given their rather successful pedigree in the series.
Instead, the Italians are seemingly struggling with a rear suspension issue, where the back of the car collapses under load, which causes extreme skid block wear, which in turn can result in a disqualification as was seen recently in China. This forces the team to set up the car with a higher ride height which compromises speed, drivability, ride and overall performance.
Whilst team principal Frederic Vasseur has focused time and time again on the 'execution' during race weekends, referring to strategic calls, set-up of the car and such, his drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have urged the team to bring upgrades so they can fight for loftier prizes.

Hamilton challenges the engineers to think outside the box

In recent weeks reports from Italian media have hinted at a potential Vasseur exit, with Ferrari chairman John Elkann seemingly giving his blessing for the publishing of said reports, or allegedly leaking them himself. Now Hamilton seems to go against Vasseur's well-known discourse.
Speaking to media after the Canadian Grand Prix qualifying, the British Ferrari driver discussed how he managed to improve on his overall performance, which was enough to beat teammate Leclerc.
“It's just incremental steps. We've not had any upgrades or anything like that, it's been the same car for quite some time now. And with the same package each weekend, I'm just challenging the guys."
"I'm constantly battling the engineers, asking them questions. Because they set things up and are like 'this is how we always do it' and I'm like 'what about this?’.

Hamilton's request, seemingly challenges Vasseur's discourse

“So we work on trying things and bit by bit, we are making progress. We're improving our qualifying from Monaco onwards, which is positive," said Hamilton.
However, the British driver seems to disagree with his team principal on the execution throughout the race weekends alone being enough to improve on the Italian squad's results. "Ultimately we need upgrades. We need an upgrade to be able to fight the guys up front."
