Oscar Piastri will start the Qatar Grand Prix on pole position after setting the benchmark in qualifying.
The
McLaren driver kept out of trouble while
Lando Norris made a mistake towards the end of the session.
Max Verstappen will start in third place on the grid in a blow to his title hopes, ahead of George Russell.
Isack Hadjar performed admirably to take sixth for Racing Bulls and will share the third row of the grid with Kimi Antonelli.
Williams' Carlos Sainz broke into the top 10 and set a 1:20.2, which was good enough for seventh place.
Sainz's fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso will start in eighth place for Aston Martin, significantly ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll, who didn't get out of Q1.
The final two drivers in Q3 saw Pierre Gasly outqualify Charles Leclerc's Ferrari as the Italian teams difficult weekend continues.
There was a red flag with five and a half minutes to go in qualifying, and a sticker got caught in the Williams of Sainz.
Norris took provisional pole after setting the pace in the opening runs, less than half a tenth quicker than Piastri. Leclerc also had a high-speed spin in his Ferrari amid a difficult day.
Gasly qualified for the top 10 shootout in his Alpine with a time good enough for eighth in the second part of qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton got eliminated in Q1 for the second time this weekend and will start the Qatar Grand Prix from 18th on the grid.
The Ferrari driver has struggled all weekend and will have a lot of ground to make up in tomorrow's race.
Yuki Tsunoda also didn't make it to the second part of qualifying and will start from 16th for Red Bull.
Hadjar set the pace in the opening stages of Q1 for Racing Bulls as the track continued to grip up in qualifying.
Franco Colapinto suffered a slow start for Alpine as the French team had a difficult start to the weekend in Qatar.
