FIA shares statement on meeting amid 2026 engine trick rumours

Mercedes and Red Bull Ford have reportedly found a way to extract more power from its engine for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Amid speculation about a meeting between the engine suppliers and the federation, the FIA has now shared a statement.

During the Formula 1 winter break, reports emerged suggesting that a possible trick may have been used by power unit supplier Mercedes and also Red Bull Ford. It has been suggested that with an increase above the allowed 16:1 compression ratio when the engine is running, they would have an advantage of four tenths a lap.

FIA statement on planned meeting

Ahead of the first pre-season tests, a meeting will be scheduled by the FIA. A spokesperson for the federation explained to GPblog that this is a 'customary' meeting, one that would take place ahead of every regulation change.

"As is customary with the introduction of new regulations, discussions on the 2026 iteration covering power unit and chassis are ongoing.

"The meeting planned for 22 January is between technical experts. As always, the FIA assesses the situation in order to make sure the Regulations are understood and applied in the same manner between all the participants."
