FIA release statement after rally incident claims spectator’s life

Last weekend marked a tragic one for motorsport, with Juha Miettinen losing his life at the Nordschleife following a severe crash at the age of 66.

Rally drivers Didier Arias and Hector Nunez were also involved in a major accident in Argentina after their car hit a dirt mound and was launched into the air. While the drivers escaped unharmed, several spectators were injured and one person was tragically killed, as confirmed by the FIA in a statement.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, and our thoughts remain with all those injured and affected. We thank the emergency services and medical teams for their rapid response.”

The FIA added it stands ready to fully assist the organisers and the relevant local authorities, as investigations into the incident continue.

As previously reported, another tragedy unfolded last weekend with the passing of Miettinen, who was involved in a severe seven-car incident in which he was the only driver to lose his life.

The FIA also responded to the incident, issuing a statement expressing its sadness at Miettinen’s death during the opening race of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, and extending its thoughts to his family, friends and everyone involved in the event.
